What have you gained from participating in the ADM Band Competition?
Participating in ADM’s competition has given me a reason to finish songs and reflect on their broader concept—who and what they might exist for and what message they carry. This time, participation has also given wind to the sails of my dream to release my first solo vinyl. Additionally, I’ve taken away the realization that this art might mean something to someone else, which is the most heartwarming feeling for an artist.
What do you have in store for the future? Are you already thinking of the next record?
I’m always thinking about the next album! There are many ideas and songs. I don’t know yet if they’ll find their place on a Poolring album or a band album—probably both. In February, the Eesti Laul final awaits with the band, so it’s definitely going to be a big year for Minimal Wind. By the way, you can hear Poolring songs at Minimal Wind concerts too! I hope we can perform the tracks from the DØJØ EP at festivals and dance with the audience. One thing the future could definitely bring is a book about the world of Poolring. Right now, I’m trying to write one chapter a day.
Are you satisfied with our cooperation? What haveyou liked most about it so far?
The collaboration has been exceptionally pleasant. Thank you! Warm and intelligent people have contributed their talents to bringing this album to life. What I’ve appreciated the most is the team’s professionalism and initiative while still maintaining a homely feel. Honestly, I’d love to be a member of ADM’s team myself. It has been reassuring to feel that someone else is also helping to bring the artistic vision of DØJØ to life.
What do you as winner of ADM Band Competition 2024 think is the recipe for success that you would recommend to other young musicians?
Always take part in every competition and challenge. I really like the metaphor of fishing when working with dreams. There’s magic in repeatedly casting your line. In doing so, you learn to fish better and increase the chances of catching something. Be bold with your musical ideas and approach—take part in an interesting competition, ask a friend for their opinion, try something new for yourself, build a story from a tune you heard in a dream, or from a book title you misread by accident.
And lastly, please share with us three reasons why you would recommend that all other young musicians take part in the ADM Band Competition.
There are so many reasons to participate! ADM’s competition is a unique contest, with its prize being the creation of a vinyl—certainly a dream for any musician! Sending in your songs means you’ve already won the battle against “resistance” (from Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art), which is the greatest enemy of art. Lately, I’ve enjoyed thinking of resistance as a monster you have to fight. And finally—a deadline is an excellent motivator to finish songs. So, there’s so much to gain, and the only thing to lose is by not participating.
